Analyses by Grimberg and Richmond illustrate applications of psychoanalytic theory to suggest that My Birth and My Nurse and I offer evidence of Kahlo's childhood psychosexual development that, in turn, accounts for her psychosexual behavior as an adult. Essentially, their analyses apply psychoanalytic theory as a diagnostic tool. Using Kahlo's paintings as the means to diagnose the artist rests on two problematic issues. First, the paintings are approached as if they provide direct, unmediated access to the artist's psyche. Second, the process accedes to pervasive masculine authority in defining women through various and compatible discourses, including Freudianism and surrealism, already dominated and determined by masculine authority. This is the crux of the dilemma in acknowledging Kahlo as an active, creative artist who produced, rather than mimicked, ideologically relevant works of art which themselves incorporate masculinist discourse as the only available language.
